How to join vectors in Vectric software | Editing Objects

This video demonstrates how to join open vectors in Vectric software using several methods: moving endpoints to a common point, joining with a smooth curve, joining with a straight line, and using the dedicated Join/Close Vector tool with tolerance control. It also shows how to identify open vectors and use Node Editing to manually adjust geometry before joining.

  1. Join by moving endpoints to a common point

    • Select the vector with a missing endpoint, e.g., a triangle tip.
    • Click the move endpoints to a common point tool in the join options.
    • Alternatively, right-click the vector and choose Close Vector by Moving Endpoints.
  2. Join with a smooth curve

    • For curved shapes like an incomplete letter “S”, click the join with smooth curve tool.
    • Or right-click and select Join Vectors with Smooth Curve.
  3. Join with a straight line

    • For shapes needing a flat edge, like the top of an “A”, click the join/close vectors with a straight line tool.
    • Or right-click and choose Join/Close Vectors with a Line.
  4. Use the dedicated join tool for open vectors

    • Select a vector that appears closed but may not be.
    • Open the Join/Close Vector tool.
    • The tool reports whether the selected vector is open and shows the distance between start/end points.
    • Adjust the tolerance value until it is large enough to cover the gap; a value too small will keep the vector open.
    • Click Join to close the vector.
  5. Manually adjust vectors before joining (Node Editing)

    • For cases where a straight line crosses incorrectly, enter Node Editing mode with N.
    • Drag vector endpoints to snap to other geometry.
    • Press Escape to exit Node Editing.
    • Use the straight-line join tool to finish closing the vector.
  • Open vectors can look visually closed until you zoom in or use the join tool.
  • The join tool’s tolerance field represents the distance between the start and end points of the selected vector. If tolerance is too small, the vector remains open.
  • Right-click context menus provide quick access to the same join actions as toolbar buttons.
  • Keyboard shortcuts: J for the join tool, N for Node Editing mode.
  • Node Editing may be necessary when a straight join would cross over existing geometry; extend/snap endpoints manually before joining.
