How to create a 3D model from a JPG using Vectric's Aspire

This video demonstrates a higher-quality workflow for turning a JPG/photo into a 3D model in Vectric Aspire. Instead of relying only on “Create Component from Bitmap,” the process uses manually drawn vectors, individual component shapes, and the bitmap as a final “skin” over the model. A second example shows how to build a castle model from a blueprint using straight components, imported/recombined models, and clipart scenery.

  1. Import the reference image. Always obtain permission if the image is copyrighted.
  2. Try the “Trace Bitmap” option only if contrast is sufficient; here it failed, so draw vectors manually.
  3. Organize the work with named layers/levels and distinct colors. Start by drawing closed vectors for each major part: body, beak, feathers, legs, head, etc.
  4. Select a closed vector and click Create Component. Choose an appropriate shape, e.g. domed with flat top. Name the component and adjust its shape height/base height as needed. Apply.
  5. Build sub-details from additional closed vectors, such as the feather spine/spline detail. When a group is complete, combine the component parts into one component/model so it can be resized and moved as a single item.
  6. Repeat for every element. Work from the bottom up: body, feathers, shoulder feathers, legs, head/neck, beak, and smaller features. Adjust overlap by changing shape height, base height, tilt/fade, or merge properties. Constantly check the result in the 3D view.
  7. Use sculpting or component cutting for special geometry when needed. For example, create a bowl from a small dome, then cut and delete the top portion. For the chair, model legs, support ring, seat, and seat indentation separately.
  8. When the base model is complete, select the original image and create a component from the bitmap. Use this as a “skin” laid over the model to add texture and detail.
  9. If any underlying parts create unwanted texture, edit or remove them before applying the skin, as shown with the smoother towel/napkin.
  10. For architectural models, use a blueprint/site plan instead of artistic tracing. Draw vectors for buildings/walls and create straight/extruded components to set positioning and massing.
  11. Combine the castle components into a model and export it. In a new Aspire session, import that model, cut it apart, and individually adjust Z heights of components. Add extra castle details, then create a bitmap component as the skin.
