How to use more than one 3rd party 3D models in VCarve
Overview
Section titled “Overview”This video shows how to import and combine multiple third-party 3D models into one VCarve/Aspire project, enabling composite reliefs and mixed models in a single toolpath.
- Open VCarve/Aspire and create a new project with the desired job dimensions.
- In the Modeling tab, select Import 3D Model and choose your first third-party model (STL, OBJ, etc.).
- Place the model on the job area and adjust its position, size, and base height if needed.
- Import the second third-party model using the same Import 3D Model command.
- Position the second model relative to the first, using alignment tools or manual placement.
- If the models are separate components, combine them by selecting both and using Create Component or merging them in the component tree.
- For overlapping geometry, apply Smooth or Merge operations to unify the relief.
- Proceed with toolpath generation as you would for a single combined 3D model.
Key Points / Warnings
Section titled “Key Points / Warnings”- Verify that all imported models share the same units and scale before combining.
- STL/OBJ models may import as single components; check the component tree after import.
- Different model resolutions (DPI) can slow down processing—resample components to a common resolution if necessary.
- Use Align and Set Base Height tools to avoid models sitting below the material surface.
- Merging components is not always reversible, so save a separate backup file first.
- Some third-party models may contain non-manifold geometry; repair them before importing to avoid artifacts.
