Gothic Frame using Vectric Aspire

This video demonstrates a real-world restoration project using Vectric Aspire: recreating deteriorated wooden frames for stained-glass windows. The workflow focuses on creating accurate vectors from a physical rubbing, then using a two-rail sweep and V-carving toolpaths to produce the replacement frame.

  1. Create a rubbing of the original frame shape to capture the profile accurately.
  2. Digitize the rubbing using your CNC software to produce base vectors.
  3. Import the vectors into Aspire and refine them using offset, adjust, connect, and join tools.
  4. Use the cleaned vectors as the basis for a two-rail sweep:
    • Select two vectors as the rails.
    • Place the profile in position.
    • Generate the swept 3D model.
  5. Block out the wood stock vectors to plan efficient material use.
  6. Join bottom vectors as needed for toolpathing.
  7. Select all closed vectors and generate a finish toolpath (a roughing toolpath was used in the real project but omitted for this demo).
  8. Use the selected-vectors option to create the toolpaths.
  9. Select the inner vectors to create a profile toolpath to cut out the shape.
  10. Delete waste material in the preview to confirm the result.
  11. Add decorative triangular details using V-carving toolpaths.
  12. Review and preview the final model before machining.
  • Vector accuracy and node count are critical: if the vectors are correct, the two-rail sweep and toolpaths will work properly.
  • The two-rail sweep requires exactly two rails and one profile.
  • Take time to offset, adjust, connect, and join vectors before creating the sweep.
  • For the real project, use glued-up lumber (Sapele) and a half-inch end mill, six inches long.
  • The finished frame was made in two pieces to sandwich the stained glass between them.
  • After machining, apply primer and paint as needed.
  • The exterior protective covering from a previous studio was weather protection but architecturally inappropriate; design choices matter in restoration work.
  • Practice with vectors and two-rail sweeps makes this type of custom restoration much easier.
