How to use the prism toolpath in Vectric software | 2.5D Toolpaths
Overview
Section titled “Overview”The Prism Carving toolpath creates a raised, beveled prism shape on selected closed vectors using an angled tool, producing a hand-carved effect. This video demonstrates how to set it up in Vectric Aspire, including depth calculation, tool selection, and previewing the result.
- Select a closed vector in the drawing.
- Go to the Toolpath Operations section in the Toolpath tab and choose Prism Carving.
- Set the Start Depth – the depth from the top of the material where the toolpath begins.
- Set the Prism Depth – the height of the prism.
- Use Set Depth for Full Prism to calculate the maximum prism depth based on the shortest distance between vectors.
- Choose an angled tool, e.g., a 9-degree V-bit.
- Select the Cut Direction: Climb or Conventional.
- If multiple letters/shapes exist, set the cut order.
- Optionally use the Vector Selector to choose specific vectors or layers for this toolpath.
- Name the toolpath and click Calculate.
- Preview the visible toolpath to verify the result.
Key Points / Warnings
Section titled “Key Points / Warnings”- Prism Carving is often used on lettering and is frequently paired with a Profile or Pocket toolpath to cut vertical edges or clear material between shapes.
- Using a prism depth smaller than the calculated full prism depth will leave flat areas on top of the prism.
- The full prism depth is determined by the shortest distance between vectors; entering a larger value is not possible without producing unwanted geometry.
- A dedicated V-bit or angled tool is required for the raised bevel effect.
