How to accentuate your 3D models in Aspire

This tutorial demonstrates a technique for accentuating 3D models in Aspire by creating custom overlay components with two-rail sweeps, node editing, and sculpting. Two examples are shown: a ribbon draped over a double-heart model, and an octopus overlaid on an anchor/rope composition.

  1. Open a new Aspire session with a single-sided setup and modeling resolution set to very high.
  2. Import models from the Clip Art Gallery (e.g., double heart, ribbon) and adjust size/position as needed.
  3. Increase the base height of the ribbon so it sits fully above the hearts.
  4. Create a boundary vector for each component (hearts and ribbon).
  5. Drag guidelines to the top and bottom of the ribbon to define the area for the new component.
  6. Offset the heart vector by a chosen amount (e.g., 1 inch) to create the rails foar a two-rail sweep.
  7. Make the heart visible and create a cross-sectional profile at the guidelines.
  8. In Node Edit mode, cut nodes with C, select the two rails, and convert them to Bezier curves to reduce node count.
  9. Draw a new vector over the cross-sectional profile, simulating how a flexible material would naturally lay over the hearts (with soft pockets in tight corners).
  10. Smooth the new vector by selecting nodes and pressing S; add/delete nodes as needed.
  11. Run the Two-Rail Sweep: select the rails, attach profile curves to top and bottom, then apply.
  12. Inspect the 3D result. Distortion may occur from an unnecessary node; fix it using the sculpting/smoothing tools instead of rebuilding the sweep.
  13. Select the new component and the original ribbon vector; constrain everything inside the ribbon boundary vector.
  14. Enable the original ribbon and new component, then make a copy of the visible model.
  15. Set the components to merge and adjust base height/shape height so the ribbon sits naturally over the hearts.
  16. For the second example: import the rope border, anchor, and octopus; add a zero plane; create a boundary vector for the octopus.
  17. Hide the octopus and create a new model from the existing 3D view, keeping everything inside the octopus vector.
  18. Use sculpting/smoothing on the new component, then re-enable the anchor, rope, zero plane, and octopus.
  19. Compare before/after results and adjust the shape height of the overlay component to achieve the desired impact.
  • Always use a very high modeling resolution for cleaner results.
  • Offset distances are approximate; test values that work for the project.
  • Converting to Bezier curves significantly reduces nodes, making the sweep rails smoother.
  • Natural materials like cloth do not follow tight inner corners; draw soft, flowing vectors with slight gaps/pockets.
  • Distortion after a two-rail sweep is common and may be fixed with the sculpting tool rather than by rerunning the sweep.
  • The sculpting/smoothing process is artistic and can take anywhere from minutes to hours.
  • Merging components gives precise control over how the new component sits above the original.
  • Changing the shape height of the overlay component can create subtle or dramatic differences.
  • Use boundary vectors and visibility toggling to constrain and compare work.
