3D Modeling for Newbies Lesson 6 Extrude and Weave Part 2

This lesson continues 3D modeling basics by combining the Extrude and Weave tool, Two-Rail Sweep, and simple components to build a decorative bugle with a mouthpiece, ribbon, and tassels. It shows how to create and trim independent components and merge them without affecting the main model.

  1. Create the base bugle shape using the Extrude and Weave tool with the Over and Under option, then hit Apply.
  2. Draw additional vectors to use as rails and trim away unwanted parts of the base shape.
  3. For the front of the horn: draw an oval vector, select it, choose the Create Shape icon, and create a Dish component.
  4. For the mouthpiece: create two profile vectors, select them as rails, choose a profile, run Two-Rail Sweep with component mode set to Merge, and hit Apply.
  5. For the ribbon support: draw top and bottom arcs, use them as rails in a Two-Rail Sweep, then select the profile shape and apply it.
  6. For the ribbon folds: draw left and right arcs plus a profile. Run the operation with the component set to Add, then trim the result using the original profile’s closed vector so only the area inside remains.
  7. Put the ribbon components on their own level and set that level’s property to Merge so they combine with each other but do not interact with the bugle.
  8. Create the decorative button: draw simple circles, use Create Shape to make a dome, and adjust the base height or shape height until it looks correct.
  9. For the tassels: draw two slanted vectors as rails, use Two-Rail Sweep with a bottom profile, set the component to Merge, and hit Apply.
  10. Trim the tassel component: select the left closed vector and the component, cut it apart, then select the right closed vector and the remaining component, keeping only what is inside each closed vector.
  11. Smooth the tassels by lowering the shape height if needed.
  12. Review the result. The model can be converted into a 3D model and refined further in the sculpting tool.
  • Use Over and Under in the Extrude and Weave tool to create interlocking base shapes.
  • Make sure the rails are running in the same direction before using Two-Rail Sweep.
  • Use Merge/Add component modes when combining shapes into one component.
  • Use closed vectors to trim or cut apart components and keep only the geometry you need.
  • Put non-interacting parts on their own level and set the level property to Merge to control how components combine.
  • Adjust Shape Height to refine and smooth components such as tassels.
