How to set-up your material in Vectric software | Toolpath FAQ's

This video explains how to configure the Material Setup form in Vectric Aspire/VCarve before generating toolpaths. It covers a single flat-sided project, confirming machine/material settings, and positioning 3D models within the material thickness.

  1. Open the Material Setup form

    • Go to the Toolpaths tab.
    • Click Material Setup at the top right.
    • The form opens automatically before creating toolpaths if no valid material setup exists.
  2. Verify material thickness

    • Check the measured thickness of your actual material.
    • Update the Material Thickness field if it does not match.
  3. Set the XY datum position

    • Choose an origin position such as lower-left, top-left, top-right, bottom-right, or center.
    • The red dot/square in the 2D/3D views updates to show the selected corner/position.
    • This position corresponds to where the machine is positioned at X=0, Y=0.
    • If a non-zero datum is required, enable Use Offset and enter the X/Y offset values.
  4. Set the Z-zero position

    • Choose whether Z=0 is measured from the material surface or the machine bed.
    • Set the same Z-zero reference on the physical machine.
  5. Set rapid Z gaps

    • Clearance gap: safe height above the job where the cutter can move at rapid feed rate.
    • Plunge gap: distance the tool rapids down to before plunge moves.
    • Make sure these clear any clamps/fixtures on the job.
  6. Set the home/start position

    • Enter the absolute X/Y home position.
    • Set the Z gap above material for the start/return position.
  7. Accept and review

    • Click OK to accept the setup.
    • In the Toolpaths tab, a summary graphic shows key settings: clearance, material thickness, Z-zero, XY origin, and home position.
    • To hide this summary, uncheck Show Detailed Summary in the Material Setup form.
  8. For 3D parts

    • Load a 3D model.
    • In Material Setup, check that the model thickness is smaller than the material thickness.
    • Use the graphic and slider to position the model vertically within the material.
    • The form displays gap above and gap below the model.
    • Enter precise gap values if needed, or use the Gap Above / Gap Below fields.
    • Double-click the lines in the graphic to snap the model to:
      • Dead center
      • Bottom
      • Top
    • To change model thickness, use the Set option next to the model thickness field, enter a new height, and click Apply.
  • Material Setup data is initially carried over from the Job Setup form, but always double-check it against the actual material and machine.
  • The XY datum must match how the tool is positioned at X=0, Y=0 on your machine.
  • Z-zero must be set consistently on the machine: either material surface or machine bed.
  • Clearance and plunge gaps must be safe for your setup—make sure moving parts clear any clamps or fixtures.
  • The home/start position is where the tool begins and can be programmed to return to after cutting.
  • Keep Show Detailed Summary enabled for a quick visual reference of material setup values.
  • For 3D machining, the model thickness must be less than the material thickness.
  • Always leave a small gap above the model when possible to avoid flat spots caused by material thickness variations.
  • Only place the model exactly at the top surface if machining negative shapes like dishes/recesses, and only if the material surface is flat.
  • Ensure all material setup values are safe and appropriate for your machine, tooling, and material.
