How to effectively reduce 3D model Z height without loss of details

This video demonstrates techniques for reducing the Z-height of a 3D model in Vectric Aspire while preserving surface detail. It compares four methods: direct flattening, the Emboss tool, manually cutting the model into sections and adjusting base/shape heights, and using an external tool called Pattern Sculptor.

  1. Import the 3D model and position it on the left side of the workspace. Note the original Z-height (example: 9 inches).

  2. Method 1: Flatten using Shape Height

    • Duplicate the original component and rename it.
    • Select the duplicate and progressively lower the Shape Height in the Component Properties.
    • Continue reducing until the target Z-height is reached (0.5 inches).
    • Observe that detail is significantly lost at low Z-heights.
  3. Method 2: Emboss Tool

    • Duplicate the original component and set its Component Property to Merge.
    • Select the duplicate and choose the Emboss tool.
    • Adjust the percentage until the resulting thickness is close to the target (0.5 inches).
    • Use smoothing to clean up the rugged appearance.
    • Adjust Shape Height in Component Properties if exact thickness is needed.
    • Compare the result with the flattened version.
  4. Method 3: Cut Apart and Adjust Base/Shape Heights

    • Duplicate the original component.
    • Draw vectors to divide the model into five sections: hips, legs, shoulders, head, and shoe.
    • Select each vector + component and use the Cut tool to separate the model into individual components.
    • For each section:
      • Select the component and lower the Base Height to remove excess material.
      • Use Replace Below to delete material below the model surface.
      • Adjust the Shape Height to restore proportion and detail.
      • Repeat until the desired Z-height is achieved.
    • After all sections are adjusted, select all five components and Bake them together.
    • Inspect for holes or gaps between sections, especially when using small bits.
  5. Method 4: Pattern Sculptor

    • Export the 3D model from Aspire.
    • Import it into Pattern Sculptor software.
    • Adjust the Z-height/thickness and apply smoothing/softening tools as needed.
    • Export the modified model and import it back into Aspire.
  6. Compare final results

    • Flattened version at target Z-height.
    • Embossed version at target Z-height.
    • Cut-apart version at target Z-height.
    • Pattern Sculptor version at target Z-height.
    • Check which retains the most visible depth and clean detail.
  • Shape Height alone reduces Z-height but flattens details, producing a poor result at low heights.
  • Emboss retains more detail but can distort geometry; use with patience and smoothing.
  • Cutting a model apart allows separate control of Base Height and Shape Height per region, preserving more dimensionality.
  • Replace Below is critical after lowering Base Height — it removes unwanted material below the surface.
  • There is no exact formula for Base Height / Shape Height values when cutting apart; it is a trial-and-error process.
  • After baking combined components, check for holes or gaps — a small bit may cut into spaces between sections.
  • Pattern Sculptor is an optional external standalone tool from Carve Right that can reduce Z-height while retaining significant depth/detail.
  • The tutorial notes a common quiz result: the flattened version and cut-apart version may have the same thickness, but the actual visible depth differs depending on the method used.
