How to use the snapping options in Vectric software | Transforming Objects
Overview
Section titled “Overview”This video demonstrates how to configure and use the snapping options in Vectric software to improve drawing precision. It covers snap settings, guides, grid snapping, fixed nudge distance, snapping radius, geometry snapping, and smart snapping, with practical examples.
- Open Snap Options via Edit > Snap Options or press F4.
- Enable Display text at cursor to show coordinates, radius, length, and angle information next to the mouse pointer while drawing.
- Set up Snap to guides:
- Drag guidelines from the top or left rulers.
- Use the line tool and hover over a guide to snap to it.
- Toggle guideline visibility using the top-left icon; note that this also toggles the snap option.
- Delete unwanted guides via Right-click > Delete Guide.
- Configure Snap guides to geometry (automatically disabled when snap to guides is off).
- Enable Snap to grid:
- Adjust the Grid spacing field to set the distance between grid dots.
- Draw shapes snapping to grid points.
- Use the top-right grid toggle to quickly turn grid snapping on/off.
- Enable Snap to job center/corners to snap to the material boundary center and corners.
- Set the Fixed nudge distance:
- Enter a value in the field.
- Select an object, hold Ctrl+Shift, and use arrow keys to move it by that exact distance.
- Adjust the Snapping radius with the slider:
- Larger radius makes it easier to snap from farther away.
- Smaller radius is more precise; a visual circle indicates the snap radius.
- Configure Geometry snapping options:
- Object centers: snap to the center of closed objects/vectors.
- Span endpoints: snap to the start/end points of lines/arcs.
- Span midpoints: snap to the middle of lines/arcs.
- Arc centers: snap to the center point of arcs.
- Intersections: snap to intersecting geometry.
- Configure Smart snapping:
- Object bounds: detects bounding boxes around objects (shown as blue lines).
- Horizontal/Vertical: draws temporary horizontal/vertical alignment lines.
- Tangents: press T while drawing a line to create a tangent from an arc/circle.
- Perpendicular: smart snapping also detects lines perpendicular to tangents.
- From nodes/midpoints: hover over a corner/endpoint, then move to another to locate the midpoint.
- Snap angle increments: set to 15° (default) to constrain line angles in fixed steps.
Key Points / Warnings
Section titled “Key Points / Warnings”- The Display text at cursor option is useful for reading live dimensions while drawing; it applies to circles, lines, etc.
- Turning off guide visibility also disables “Snap to guides” in the Snap Options form.
- Grid spacing changes affect the visible dot grid and snap increments.
- Fixed nudge distance only applies when using Ctrl+Shift+Arrow keys; normal arrow keys still use the standard nudge distance.
- Snapping radius is a personal preference – experiment to find a comfortable value.
- Geometry snapping targets include centers, endpoints, midpoints, arc centers, and intersections.
- Smart snapping reduces the need for construction geometry by generating temporary snap points for bounds, tangents, perpendiculars, and midpoints.
- Use the spacebar to access additional snap context actions during drawing (e.g., midpoints between two points).
