How to import and machine a 3D model in Vectric VCarve & Aspire | Getting Started

This guide covers how to build a 3D composition from clipart and text, then machine it using two approaches: sketch carving and traditional 3D toolpaths. It is applicable to VCarve Desktop Pro and Aspire.

  1. Create a new job

    • Choose a single-sided job.
    • Set width to 9 in, height to 6 in.
    • Enter material thickness, e.g. 0.759 in.
    • Set units to inches, zero from the material surface, and set XY datum to bottom-left.
    • Set modeling resolution to Very High for detailed 3D work.
    • Select material type, e.g. Canadian Maple, then click OK.
  2. Work in the 3D view

    • Hold right mouse button to rotate the view.
    • Use the view control or click a face to snap to that view.
    • Look straight down for a bird’s-eye view.
  3. Import and scale the Magnolia clipart

    • Open the Clip Art tab.
    • Browse to Plants and Fruit and double-click Magnolia.
    • Use the bottom-right handle to scale proportionally.
    • Enter 5.5 for the width and press Enter.
  4. Import and position the ribbon

    • Browse to Ribbons and Banners and double-click banner.v3m.
    • Click the rotation handle, enter 180, and press Enter.
    • Hold Alt and drag the ribbon down into position.
    • Hold Shift and drag a corner handle to scale it up.
    • Use arrow keys to nudge it into place.
  5. Adjust component heights so the ribbon overlaps the flower

    • Rotate the 3D view to inspect the overlap.
    • Select the ribbon.
    • Use the Base Height control to raise the ribbon until it covers a petal that would interfere with text.
