How to create a relief model in Vectric Aspire | Getting Started

This video demonstrates how to build a 3D relief model in Vectric Aspire using the interactive shape creation tools in the 3D view. It covers creating rounded and angular components, adjusting their base height, combining them, and organizing the component tree for a multi-material plaque project.

  1. Open the existing project file Sweet Dreams Bedroom Doorsign.crv3d.
  2. Review the project setup in the Sheets tab.
    • The project contains two sheets: Walnut (background) and Maple (insert).
    • Both sheets are single-sided, 0.75“ thick, and zeroed off the material surface.
    • Datum is set to the bottom-left corner for both sheets.
    • Use a very high modeling resolution to maximize pixel density.
    • For detailed 3D modeling, use a custom-sized smaller sheet so the model occupies more of the available pixels.
  3. Go to the Design tab and locate the Modeling Tools:
    • Flat plane
    • Rounded shape
    • Angular shape
    • Smooth shape
    • Custom shape
  4. Create the cloud:
    • Select the cloud vector.
    • Choose Create Rounded Shape Component.
    • Hold the left mouse button and drag up to create a positive puffy shape.
    • Use the interactive limit handle to flatten the top of the cloud.
    • Hide vectors if they obstruct the view.
  5. Create the moon:
    • Select the moon vector.
    • Use the Create Rounded Shape dialog to create a rounded dome.
    • Rotate the 3D view using the right mouse button or the view control.
    • Change the combine mode to Merge Component so the moon blends correctly with the cloud.
    • Add Base Height to the cloud and moon to create a small edge for tool definition.
  6. Create the stars:
    • Select all star vectors.
    • Choose Create Angular Shape Component.
    • Drag up to create pointed star shapes.
    • Enable Preserve Internal Corners for sharper star detail.
    • Add a small amount of Base Height to each star.
  7. Review the model in the 3D view and use the Component Tree to select, organize, and rename components as needed.
  • Vectors can be hidden/shown with the vector visibility button to improve the 3D view while modeling.
  • Left-click drag creates and adjusts a component; right-click drag rotates the 3D view.
  • The interactive limit handle flattens the top of a rounded shape.
  • Use Merge Component instead of Add when combining overlapping shapes into a single relief.
  • Adding Base Height gives the carving tool a defined edge, creating crisp separation between components.
  • Preserve Internal Corners is important for angular shapes like stars to avoid rounded inner points.
  • A smaller dedicated modeling sheet results in higher pixel density and better detail for the relief model.
  • Name components as you work to keep the component tree organized, especially in multi-part projects.
